Still Life

The lesson of tradition

Fruit, blossom, butterflies, a spring sky: figurative painting as an exercise in looking and patience, and a tribute to the great Italian tradition of still life.

Acrylic still life: oranges, lemons, apples and a glass fruit stand on a dark wooden table, with flowering peach branches and butterflies against a blue sky with clouds

Alongside abstract research, figurative painting remains a training ground for the eye. Still life, in particular, is the genre that teaches us to observe more than any other: the light on an orange peel, the transparency of a glass bowl, the weight of a lemon resting on wood.

In this collection the Italian tradition — from Caravaggio to the Baroque still lifes and on to Giorgio Morandi — is reinterpreted with a bright, spring-like palette and an almost decorative taste for detail: flowering branches, butterflies, light clouds.

It is proof that abstraction and figuration are not separate worlds: the same attention to colour, balance and the rhythm of forms runs through both.
