Everything in this painting turns. Rings of red, yellow, blue and green follow one another from the edge towards the centre, touching and at times merging. The light blue ground appears only at the margins, like the air around a whirlpool.
The primary colours
The title comes from the palette: red, yellow and blue are the primary colours, from which — in theory — all others can be mixed. Here they are used pure, side by side, unmixed. It is the viewer’s eye that blends them, creating vibrations and contrasts that make the painting seem to move.
Green, the only secondary colour, appears in the outer, darker rings, like vegetation growing at the edge of the vortex.
The technique
The lines were traced with fluid acrylic paint poured in continuous paths. Where two colours meet while still wet, their edges ripple and mingle slightly: small accidents that give the surface an organic, almost biological quality.
How to look at it
Stare at the centre for a few seconds: the rings will seem to pulse, expand and contract. It is the effect of complementary colours placed side by side, the same effect studied by the Op Art painters of the 1960s.
