Summer Roots

Radici d'estate (original Italian title)

The vertical canvas is divided into three areas, like a stylised landscape: a fiery red sky at the top, a band of yellow and blue horizontal stripes vibrating like hot air in the middle, and a bright green field below. Across everything, from top to bottom, run long sinuous lines of dark green and blue, dotted with drops.

Rain or roots?

The drips seem to fall from the sky like sudden, warm summer rain; but when they reach the green field they widen, curl and end in small scattered drops — just like roots seeking the earth. The painting lives in this ambiguity: between what falls and what grows.

The structure

Beneath the freedom of the drips lies a precise structure: the horizontal background bands, rigorous and parallel, act as a grid; the vertical lines, irregular and alive, cut across it. It is the dialogue between order and gesture that runs through all of Antonio Di Cristofaro’s painting.

Who it is for

Its vertical format and full colours make it perfect for tall, narrow spaces: beside a door, in a hallway, in an entrance.
