A warm ground of ochre and burnt earth, laid with circular brushstrokes that still show through. On top, patches of dark green, almost black, scattered like leaves or moss. And over everything a dense web of thin threads — yellow, red, green — dropped from above, interweaving and overlapping.
The reference
The gesture inevitably recalls Jackson Pollock’s dripping, the technique of letting paint drip onto a canvas laid flat. But the atmosphere here is different: there is none of the fury of American Abstract Expressionism, but rather the teeming quiet of a wood, the bustle of life hidden among leaves and roots.
Up close
This is a painting to discover at close range. The yellow drops become small lights, like fireflies or rays of sun filtering through branches; the red threads look like the tracks of insects, tiny paths. Every centimetre of the surface is different from the next.
Who it is for
A rich, warm work that never runs out: whoever looks at it every day will keep discovering new details.
