Three large bands dominate the canvas: shades of ultramarine, purple and magenta, laid with quick, scratched horizontal strokes. Between them, two textured ridges of yellow and acid green, dense and luminous, run parallel like riverbanks.
Water
The blue and purple, with their streaks, recall flowing water: deep currents rippled by light. The yellow ridges are like banks lit by the sun, or the sudden glint on a river’s surface. It is a water landscape seen from above, reduced to a few essential marks.
The colour
The pairing of blue-purple and yellow-green is one of the most vibrant in painting: they are nearly complementary colours that set each other alight. The magenta emerging at the edges of the blue bands adds warmth and an almost electric vibration.
A series
Currents belongs to the Bands series, together with Five Breaths and Golden Fields: three variations on the same structure, like three movements of a sonata. Shown together they make a striking triptych.
