It is the richest and most articulated of the band paintings. From top to bottom, eight bands alternate: dense ridges of orange and rust red with yellow glints, and wide fields of lemon yellow and green scratched by the brush. In the middle, a band of deep turquoise and a thin thread of emerald green bring a fresh note of water.

The countryside

The title comes from the palette: these are the colours of the countryside at the height of summer. The yellow of ripe wheat, the green of irrigated fields, the red of ploughed earth, the blue of a canal. As in an aerial view, the landscape becomes a sequence of bands of colour.

The texture

The orange ridges are built in impasto, with thick paint worked in small touches: they have a lively, almost sculptural surface that casts small shadows. The wide bands, by contrast, are light, transparent, scratched. It is this contrast of surfaces that gives depth and life to the whole.

Who it is for

Warm, sunny, vital: a work that lights up a room. Perfect in a kitchen, a dining room, or a north-facing study that needs light.
