The rhythm of breathing
Horizontal bands of colour alternating on a white ground: quick, light, dry-brushed strokes next to dense, earthy ridges of paint. A series about rhythm, pauses and silence.
In this series the white canvas is a space of silence, and the bands of colour are like breaths passing through it. Each painting alternates two kinds of mark: wide bands laid with an almost dry brush, which lets the white show between the bristles, and narrow, dense ridges of paint that stand out almost in relief.
The rhythm is that of a poem: long lines and short lines, fullness and emptiness, sound and pause. The colours change from one work to the next — magenta and midnight blue, yellow and teal, gold and rust — but the structure remains, like a musical form on which different melodies can be played.
These works bring calm into a room. They are particularly suited to vertical spaces: beside a door, in a hallway, above a desk.
