On an intense blue ground, like a sea seen from a plane, stretches a large mass of red and dark burgundy. It is crossed by thin golden cracks and yellow veins that look like lava or lightning, and it opens into rounded hollows where the blue resurfaces: craters, lakes, eyes.
The crackle
The surface is the true subject of the painting. The layers of acrylic paint, drying at different speeds, have opened into a network of very fine cracks — crackle, or craquelure — through which the underlying colour emerges. It is a process the painter can start but not entirely control: the material, in part, paints itself.
The result recalls parched earth, the skin of a fruit, the map of a volcanic territory.
The landscape
There is no horizon and no traditional point of view: we look from above, as from a satellite. The red masses become islands, the blue becomes ocean, the golden cracks become rivers of lava. It is a primordial landscape, still forming, still hot.
Who it is for
A powerful, textured work for those who love painting to be seen up close: every centimetre of the surface tells a small geological story.
