On a white ground, five rows and five columns of shapes: red, green, blue, grey and golden circles; squares split in half into two colours; small green rectangles. Each shape is covered with a grainy, sparkling surface that catches the light.

An alphabet

The arrangement recalls a table of symbols, a primer, the tiles of an ancient game. Each shape seems to be a letter of a language we do not know but can sense: there are repetitions, symmetries, variations. The black circle at the centre, unique of its kind, is the fixed point around which everything is organised.

Symmetry and variation

Looking carefully, you discover the rule: the composition is symmetrical around the centre, but not rigidly so. Corners answer corners, sides answer sides, but colours swap and pairs are reversed. It is a game of order and surprise, as in a dance.

The light

The glittering surface makes the work alive: it changes with the light. By day the colours are full and velvety; in the evening, under a lamp, the shapes light up with reflections like small jewels.
