Phases

Fasi (original Italian title)

A blue circle at the centre, and around it moons waxing and waning: silver and gold half-moons, green segments, small pink suns. Time as a dance of shapes.

At the centre, a large blue circle, full and serene like a planet seen from space. Around it, the shapes break apart: two silver-grey half-moons at the sides, a golden half-moon at the top, two tilted green segments at the bottom, and three small circles — two pink in the upper corners, one red at the bottom centre.

The phases of the moon

The title comes from the half-moons: they look like the phases of the moon, waxing and waning around the Earth. The blue circle then becomes our planet, and the shapes around it the passing of time, of months, of seasons. The rotated green segments at the bottom suggest movement, a rotation in progress.

Emptiness

More than in the other works of the collection, here the white is the protagonist. The shapes are few and far apart, and the empty space between them becomes as important as the shapes themselves. It is a painting that breathes: essential, almost Zen.

The materials

The metallic surfaces — gold and silver — change with the light, while the matt colours stay stable: the work thus has two souls, one that lights up and one that remains quiet.

The poem · original Italian

Fasi
